Artist’s Statement

It surprised me to hear someone say, "I didn't know you did horses." Of course I "do horses"! While I have learned over the years that an individual's interest in artwork is usually governed by similar interests in life, my interest in artwork is governed by my interest in shapes. Trees, horses, people, fruit, musical instruments all have the potential to become interesting shapes and colors on a two dimensional surface.

My challenge is to make this interesting to others. I heard India.Arie talking about the process of writing songs, saying that she is "writing her truth." Her truth is not one thing. it embraces a gamut of thoughts and emotions, all coming from her heart. I would like to say, I paint my truth. Sometimes it is hard to get at that heart's deep core.

Sometimes I dance around on the edge of it. But, whether ideas flow freely, or make a complicated and inscrutable puzzle to be solved, my best pieces come from that place — where the collective soul resides.

My artistic journey began when I was kicked out of the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum for being too young (fivish). I attended three different colleges — a recommended path as I was exposed to many different styles and techniques. From oil painter to stained glass, hooked rugs to colored pencil, collage to oil pastels, I have gained an appreciation of the world through its colors. Most of my current work uses acrylic paint with or without embellishment. I will continue to "do horses" or whatever is in front of my nose at the moment. let the work be read with your eyes as a poem is heard with the ears. It is a reflection on a moment in time. The artwork bears the traces of the movement of my hand along with a trace of the intent of my heart and mind to share my enjoyment of the visual world.
